We start with the loveliness you come to this blog to see:
Lovely, in a looking at you in an upside-downy kinda way.
I'd also like to report on another lovely dinner. LadyRanger and I made Tortillitas with Shrimp! Got the recipe from this guy. If you enjoy a good food, this is worth watching!
Here's a link to the recipe in a written down form. It is a really tasty, savory dish. I was really impressed that our tortillitas looked just like the ones Mr. Bittman made. *Quite* cool. And really, really tasty. (note: I did not try to flip the tortillitas the cool way. Didn't want to eat off the floor. Didn't seem to detract...)
Miss Maddie, not being a seafood girl, was unimpressed.
Meh. Let me know when you make it with turkey. *That's* when I'll wake up.
A final note: Mr. Bittman has something like 70 episodes of his show on YouTube, as well as an archive on the NYT website. Worth a look. Lady and I already have plans to make his Pear-Upside-Down Cake. We'll let you know how it goes!
We had a *lovely* Thanksgiving. Absolutely wonderful! Thanksgiving is the one Holiday that LadyRanger and I take for ourselves. We had our traditional Thanksgiving Soup (butternut and acorn squash in a veggie-broth with corn, onion and garlic garnished with avocado, toasted walnuts and cheese) and fresh-baked bread from Lady's oven. Also had a delightful viognier to go with it. w00t! Here's a pic:
Can my wife set a table, or what? One part of the meal delivered a deep sense of satisfaction to the soul, as well as the body. The bread recipe comes from a special place. I'm sure that some of you will remember back in 2006 when a guy named Malcolm rescued a kitten after it had been hit by a car. He put out an internet call for help to pay for the kitten's medical bills. The cat-blogging community came through and the cat, christened Millie (from the french mille, meaning thousand {a reference to the dollar figure}) lived. Malcolm had to give the little critter away, but she's been rediscovered! Head over to Darling Millie and be content to see she's living the life of Reilly! Anyways, *that's* where the bread recipe came from. We call it "Millie Bread" and it is worth the making. Laurence might even have to get the bread machine out again for this one!
Anyways, I'm sure you noticed that there is a conspicuous lack of turkey on the table. LadyRanger is a vegetarian (and so am I, by marriage). The only creature who gets turkey on the holidays is Maddie. Even gets to eat it on her stool! Nom!
Afterwards, she headed to her papasan and got ready for a nap.
And then I showed up with the flashy-camera. Don't worry, she got her zzzz's by the fire. As did the humans. We hope your day, thanksgiving or not, was wonderful!
This is the first Halloween in years that we haven't had Ivy representing the wee-black-cat demographic. It's made for a modestly sad day or two. We smile wistfully when we are reminded of her spooooky presence.
Boo!
Maddie, for all her magical self, just isn't the same inspiring feelings of Halloween-y-ness.
I don't get it...
We're happy we have Maddie, but we surely do miss Ivy.
Thursday was the 8th anniversary of Maddie coming to live at Chez-Ranger. Pretty much non-stop pettin's and moochies since then, I must say. I'd never had a mammal as a pet before Maddie showed up. Never entertained the idea of having a cat 'cause I'm allergic to 'em and Maine Coons (markedly less allergic to them) cost $$$. I'll *never* fathom what made Maddie's previous family give her up but it was a gift from <insert higher power of your choice here> to find this year old Maine Coon in our local shelter. Sure, she hissed at me when I put my hand in the cage to pet her, but I'm used to that reaction when meeting females for the first time. We've gotten along famously since. I hope you enjoy this little Maddie-palooza.
<sigh> I know. I'm a sap. I'm just glad there are other folks out there like me. Thanks for dropping by.
Swine flu has been going around school. While I have managed to avoid the major funk, a sinus infection seems to have set in. Whee. Doc-in-the-box here I come. Meanwhile, Maddie gets to be Nurse Kitty.
Right! I'm scrubbing! Prep the O.R.! Time for Surgery!!
Surgery? For a sinus infection?
Absolutely! Time to start cuttin'!! And don't worry...I have the sutures ready to go!!
Um. Well. I think I'm feeling better dear. Thanks anyway.
We decided that Maddie hasn't had enough stimulation recently. When we saw a new design catnip-mousie, we figured it might work. A new toy and some catnip on the Alpine Scratcher really seem to do the trick!
I hope you'll forgive the less-than-sterling video quality. The star-power of the cat should, I hope, compensate a bit...
